Description

The construction of the building was decided on May 23, 1686, due to the poor condition of the previous temple. The first stone was laid on February 19, 1693 and the works were finished around 1702.

The construction was financed by taxes in kind (one thirtieth of the production of carobs and olives, as well as a somewhat smaller fraction of wheat), donations pledged before a notary by some neighbors, alms that were collected weekly among the neighbors.

The construction process was carried out in such a way that half of the old church was initially demolished and the first half of the new one was built on top of it. The stone of the arches of the old temple, as well as its pavement were reused. In October 1696 the first half was already built.

In 1699 the work remained to be completed, but there were no more funds for the work. Finally it was possible to finance the completion of the building with loans from neighbors of Montesa.

The earthquakes of 1748 affected the structure of the church. During the works that were carried out as a consequence, most of the baroque decoration was removed.

During the first half of the 19th century, the internal space of the church was redecorated again, and this process was completed in 1857.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the building was restored in parts.
