Description

This castle is also known as the Castillo del Real de Vilaragut and is located between the municipalities of Olocau and Marines, Valencia. The construction is a fortress from the Muslim period and was used for the defence of the north of Valencia against attacks from Aragon. There are references to its existence in accounts such as Ibn Idari's historical compilation of 11th-century Valencia. The Historia Roderici also refers to the castle in one of El Cid's "adventures". The Crónica General, in 1344, in dealing with the same events, also refers to the castle of Olocau.

This castle was one of the last fortresses to surrender during the reconquest by King James I of Aragon and remained relevant until the 13th century. In 1286, Ramón Escorna, the first Lord of Olocau, obtained the fief of the castle from Alfonso III, the Liberal, and in 1287 he was allowed to rebuild it. At the beginning of the 14th century, the lordship belonged to Joan Escorna, who sold the castle and the barony of Olocau to Mateu Mercer. Later, the manor passed to the Vilaragut family. After many fights between family members, in 1649 the county passed to the Fenollet family by marriage. Finally, in 1871, the property passed to Doña Mª del Carmen Crespí de Valldaura y Caro, daughter of the Count of Orgaz y Sumacarcer, resident of Palma de Mallorca, consort of D. José de Zaforteza y Togores, Dameto y Denti; since then, it has belonged to her descendants.
