Description

The origin of the primitive church of Palmera is to be found in the forced Christianization initiated in 1521 during the famous Germanic War. Then, the old mosque of Rahl Nakhla, the original name of Palmera (at that time an Islamic farmhouse), built sometime in the fifteenth century, became a Christian church.

At the beginning of the second half of the 16th century, Joan Ribera, an archaeologist from Valencia, was in charge of the construction of a primitive church in Palmera. On September 22, 1609, Madrid decreed the expulsion of the Moors from Spain. The repopulation was based mainly on the Mallorcans. Therefore, to the cult practiced to the titular Sant Joan Evangelista and the Puríssima Concepción, was joined the devotion carried by the repopulation to Sant Antoni Abat and the Mare de Déu de Lluch.
The Church of Palmera suffered the consequences of the Spanish Civil War of 1936. The war-revolution and the consequent social unrest ended with the looting and burning of all the images of the church. Later, in the post-war period, normality was restored and, from time to time, some of the old images were re-established.

Finally, in 1953 the church of Palmera became a parish church.
The main façade corresponds to the primitive church and shows a very different image from the original church. The renovation carried out in 2002 exposed the masonry of the church, made of masonry joined with mortar and reinforced with brick in the corners of the building, the main door and the thin one at the foot of the nave.
The fine windows that illuminate the different streetcars of the church seen are of modern work from the same reform of the year 2002. The facade is topped by a bell tower of Spain with two bells, and replaced by two stained glass windows.
The façade, at the foot of the nave, has a segmental arch, made of mass and reinforced on top with another pointed arch of the same material, designed to be covered with mortar, from the second half of the 18th century.
It is composed of four bells:

Sant Antoni Abad
Christ of Health
Purísima Concepción
Joanna
