Description

In the town centre of Paterna, several groups of cave-houses have been preserved, where 40% of the population of Paterna lived at the beginning of the 20th century. The Coves del Batà, located to the south of the town on the road that led to Campanar, has been created as a cultural space that includes an ethnographic museum. This complex has been declared a site of cultural interest.
The cave dwellings are of Moorish origin. Two types can be distinguished: those excavated directly in a slope in the ground (coves de façana) and those that excavate a common courtyard that serves as a façade to a group of two to four houses (coves enclotades).
In recent decades, Paterna town council has promoted the conservation of the caves, following the consolidation of the cultural spaces, with projects such as the "city of lost trades" or the "potters' cave", which give space in the caves to local craftsmen and craftswomen.
They are currently integrated within the Zone of the Protected Environment of the Torre-Palacio BIC. One of the best known caves was visited by King Alfonso XIII and is considered an Asset of Local Relevance. In Paterna there are 8 caves that can be visited, converted into the Espai Cultural Coves del Batà museum.
