Description

The castle was built by the Templars (1294-1307) on the remains of the old Arab citadel, located in the highest part of the rock at 64 m above sea level and has a perimeter of 230 m. It is also known as the castle of Pope Luna, who ordered small reforms transforming it into a papal palace. It has three access gates: Sant Pere, the Portal Fosc and Santa Maria. Its walls are made of carved stone and each of the rooms are covered with barrel vaults that begin with very simple imposts
formed by a moulded cordon, making the whole complex sober and solid in its construction. The castle has been bombarded in the numerous wars and sieges, which Philip II artillery the fortress.
