Description

On the top of the rock of Peñíscola and next to the castle walls is the Chapel of the Virgin of the Ermitana, built by order of the governor of Peñíscola Sancho de Echevarría (7108-1714), clearly integrated by its military aesthetics, it has strong walls of robust ashlars, a dome and a square bell tower. Its façade features the coat of arms of Philip V and many military details. The church has a Latin cross floor plan with a nave and two chapels on each side. The festivity of the Virgen de la Ermitana is celebrated every 9th September.
