Description

Its construction began shortly after the conquest of the town, preserving the wall of the doorway and the doorway itself of the primitive church of repopulation. A fire in the middle of the 15th century destroyed the church, and Pope Eugene IV, following the request of Queen Mary of Castile, granted total indulgence to the donors for the reconstruction of the church. The side chapels were covered with bricks and plaster at the end of the 17th century. Between 1725-1739 it was transformed and enlarged, changing its orientation, and a new chancel was built, consisting of a sacristy and a Communion chapel, the latter being completed on September 7, 1743. The architect Vicente Martí was in charge of designing the construction of the bell tower (1862). It is characterized by its simplicity dating from 1234, responding to the typical reconquest church, being on the remains of the old Arab mosque.
