The construction of the Church of Santa María began at the beginning of the fourteenth century, apparently on the old mosque, but its current appearance is due to the interventions carried out at the end of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, to the baroque of the mid-eighteenth century and the rehabilitation carried out in the eighties of the last century. At an architectural level, on its façade, we highlight the tympanum with the representation of the Annunciation of the Virgin, the archivolts decorated with figures of virgin martyrs, musical angels and cherubs, the mullion with the image of the Virgin and the child and the figures of the twelve apostles on both sides of the facade. Inside we can highlight the 16th century Gothic tracery vault and the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, with its cupola decorated with paintings of musical angels.
Since 2007, the Church of Santa María has become one of the most important cultural spaces in our city where large-format exhibitions are scheduled and also where concerts are held throughout the year, highlighting those of the Sacred Music Week .
La construcción de la Iglesia de Santa María se inició a principios del siglo XIV, al parecer sobre la vieja mezquita, pero su aspecto actual se debe a las intervenciones realizadas a finales del siglo XV y XVI, a la barroca de mediados del XVIII y a la rehabilitación llevada a cabo en la década de los ochenta del pasado siglo. A nivel arquitectónico, de su fachada, destacamos el tímpano con la representación de la Anunciación de la Virgen, las arquivoltas decoradas con figuras de vírgenes mártires, ángeles músicos y querubines, el parteluz con la imagen de la virgen y el niño y las figuras de los doce apóstoles a ambos lados de la fachada. De su interior podemos resaltar la bóveda de tracería gótica del siglo XVI y la capilla de Ntra. Sra. del Rosario, con su cúpula decorada con pinturas de ángeles músicos.
Desde el año 2007, la iglesia de Santa María se ha convertido en uno de los espacios culturales más importantes de nuestra ciudad donde se programan exposiciones de gran formato y también donde se realizan conciertos durante todo el año, destacando los de la Semana de Música Sacra.
