Description

The Mezquita de la Xara or Ermita de Santa Anna, is one of the most important mosques preserved in the Valencian Community. It was built around the 15th century to provide a place of prayer for the Muslims who lived in the valley after the Christian settlements of the Valldigna. When in 1525 a decree was passed that forced the conversion of the Moors to Christianity, the inhabitants of La Xara abandoned the farmhouse and soon after the mosque was converted into the Hermitage of Santa Anna.

It is a rectangular temple with four pillars that divide its interior into three naves. To the left of the door there is a spiral staircase with ancient function of minaret. Today we can also see the arches of the mihrab in the wall of the Quibla which is the most important element of the mosques as it should point the direction of Mecca. Outside we can find a well that refers to the ancient well of ablutions.
