Description

Known as Ermita de la Mare de Déu dels Desamparats del Carraixet because it is located on the right bank of the ravine of the same name, it can be seen opposite the bridge that crosses it on the old Barcelona road (Calle Cardenal Benlloch), at the exit from Tavernes Blanques towards neighbouring Almàssera.
Its origins date back to 1447 and it was built by the Brotherhood of the Holy Innocent Martyrs of Valencia - founded in 1414 - to bury the executed and homeless (burials were carried out in what is now a garden in front of the church, on the other side of the road). This brotherhood has been perpetuated to the present day under the name of Virgen de los Desamparados del Carraixet and is currently responsible for the maintenance and care of the chapel, its surroundings and the organisation of its festivities.
The construction that we can see today, however, is recent, as it was erected in the 20th century to replace the primitive temple that was in ruins, and which belonged to Alboraia until 1926. Work began in 1932 and, halted during the Civil War, was completed in 1942. It is in an excellent state of conservation.
