Description

Tuéjar and its castle had a certain importance in the Middle Ages, as a consequence of being located at the confluence of the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and the Moorish kingdom of Valencia and having in its vicinity the so-called Vado de Moya, the only place where the river could be crossed at that time, passing through it on the royal road to Castile.

It was not until 1277 that the first reference to the existence of a castle can be found, while the last reference dates from 1395, the year in which the public auction of the entire valley of the river Chelva by the juries of the city of Valencia took place.

As for the characteristics of the castle, it is located on a small hill overlooking the town, to the north of it and at an altitude of 666 metres above sea level.

From this hilltop you can see both the town and the valley where it is located. At the same time, it is a structure visible from any street in the village, as this construction visually dominates the entire village.

The state of conservation of the perimeter wall is very poor, as in some areas it has completely disappeared.
