Description

La Carencia de Turís is an ancient Iberian city, covering more than eight hectares, which began in the 4th century BC and survived until the 2nd century AD, in Roman times, although with a smaller area, and continued to be occupied in the Islamic period with a watchtower.

The site of La Carencia became known in the 19th century, but it was not until 1971 that the first excavation was carried out, which revealed materials from the Bronze, Iron, Roman and Arab cultures. The chronology of part of the site was discovered, as well as the type of constructions and the extension of part of the settlement, which was occupied from the Final Bronze Age, continuing through the Iberian, Republican Roman and Imperial Roman periods until reaching the Islamic period with the construction of a tower. A small part of the complex was uncovered with several rooms and occupation levels from the 4th to 1st centuries BC. In 2001, a project was initiated by the Diputación de Valencia, thanks to which it was possible to document three walls with towers built between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC to defend, have good visibility of the territory and give monumentality to the site.

Experts consider that in the 6th century BC the Iberian settlement was consolidated and stabilised with five settlements, and later, in the 4th century BC, it is considered the great moment of Iberian culture in the territory, as it was at this time that a fortified enclosure was created with buildings inside it. From the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, a total of 22 sites have been found with Iberian and Roman ceramic materials, which shows a higher rate of occupation than before. Remains showing signs of defence, resistance, fire and destruction can be found throughout the city. For the archaeologist Rosa Albiach, La Carència would be the so-called lost city, Kili, and one of the elements that demonstrate its importance is the imported pottery, which shows that the settlement traded with Greece and Rome.
