Description

The rock art of the Mediterranean arc of the Iberian Peninsula is a unique and representative cultural manifestation of a post-Palaeolithic prehistoric society that inhabited the mountain ranges and mountainous landscapes of the eastern part of the Peninsula, between the Pre-Pyrenees of Huesca and the southeastern mountain ranges, occupying large areas of the Autonomous Communities of Catalonia, Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia, Aragon and Castile-La Mancha. It is the largest collection of rock art in Europe and shows us exceptional images of daily life in a fundamental period in the cultural evolution of mankind: the Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic, between 10,000 and 3,500 BC, a period in which the climate stabilised and our current geological era began.

The collection consists of more than 750 sites located in rock shelters or cliffs, which contain figurative signs and images ranging from simple geometric traces to scenes depicting animals and humans in hunting, gathering, dancing or warfare compositions. They show activities such as honey-gathering or archer combat, as well as funerary rituals, magic or shamanism and everyday scenes of human groups, which provide us with fundamental information about clothing and social behaviour. These are the earliest narrated scenes from prehistoric Europe, making them an exceptionally valuable socio-economic document. Most of the representations are executed on limestone supports and the predominant colours are red, black and white.

In addition to their exclusivity and fragility, the fact that they are set in a humanised landscape of high ecological value, and their value as artistic-documentary evidence of the period, make them of great importance. The rock art of the Spanish Levant is thus configured as one of the backbone elements of the Mediterranean arc, especially in the coastal and inland mid-mountain areas, constituting a cultural region of great territorial, economic, social and cultural importance. It is precisely this landscape interest, in addition to the historical interest, which was a key element in the inclusion of these properties on the World Heritage List.
