Description

The City of Arts and Sciences is an essential visit if you come to Valencia. Designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, it has several buildings, presented below, which have become icons of the city. It is a scientific leisure complex.

The Oceanogràfic is made up of different buildings, which house representations of the most important ecosystems of each of the planet's seas and oceans. It is the largest aquarium in Europe, with a capacity to house 45,000 living creatures of 500 different species. The main marine ecosystems of the planet are represented in it. Its avant-garde architecture, the distribution of the different aquariums and its scientific, recreational and educational vocation bring the marine world closer to the entire population and raise awareness of the protection of its fauna and flora, as well as serving as a platform for scientific research.

The Hemisfèric is a unique and spectacular building, designed by Santiago Calatrava, which represents a great human eye, the eye of wisdom. This element symbolises the gaze and observation of the world that visitors discover through surprising audiovisual projections. Inaugurated in 1998, the Hemisfèric was the first building in the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències to open its doors to the public. It is the largest hall in Spain that houses three projection systems on a concave screen of 900 square metres.

The Science Museum is the great museum of the 21st century to show, in an educational, interactive and entertaining way, everything related to the evolution of life, science and technology. A building of grandiose proportions, it houses a multitude of activities and initiatives related to the evolution of life and the dissemination of science and technology. It is surrounded by 13,500 square metres of water.

The Reina Sofía Palace of the Arts is the last and most spectacular of the buildings in the City of Arts and Sciences. It has been conceived as a global cultural centre, capable of hosting opera, dance, open-air concerts, etc. It has a stage of more than 1,500 m2, incorporating the most advanced technology to host any operatic, musical or stage show, such as mobile platforms, interchangeable stages and simultaneous translations through screens in the seats themselves.

Meanwhile, the Umbracle is a huge free-access garden of more than 17,000 m2 where you can stroll around contemplating typical Mediterranean plants or contemporary sculptures.

The Agora is the most recent of the buildings that make up the City of Arts and Sciences, a versatile space that usually hosts events of all kinds. However, it is not normally open to the public and cannot be visited.

Finally, there is the L'Assut d'Or Bridge that crosses the old Turia riverbed, between the Sciences Museum and the Agora. It has several lanes for traffic in both directions and in the centre there is a pedestrian walkway linking the two banks of the Turia Garden.
