The Tribunal of the Waters is the only legislative structure that remains of those established by James I. The Arabs already practiced this irrigation system, which the monarch formally established, based on the distribution of water from the Turia. It is formed by eight farmers who still wear the black blouse typical of the people of the Huerta, who are democratically elected every two years by the remaining irrigators of the same. Seated, in a circle, in wooden and leather armchairs of the XVII century, they are invested with a saintly authority.
The structure of irrigation, the participation of the farmers and the speed with which problems are solved, has projected the Water Tribunal to the international arena, considering it a model institution. With no hint of folklore, efficient and essentially Valencian, the Water Tribunal exercises before a curious public, including young university students and foreign visitors.
El Tribunal de las Aguas es la única estructura legislativa que permanece de las establecidas por Jaime I. Los árabes practicaban ya este sistema de riego, que el monarca estableció formalmente, basado en la distribución del agua del Turia. Lo forman ocho labradores que llevan aún su blusa negra típica de las gentes de la Huerta, los cuales son elegidos democráticamente cada dos años por los restantes regantes de la misma. Sentados, en círculo, en sendos sillones de madera y cuero del siglo XVII, se les ve investidos de una senda autoridad.
La estructura del riego, la participación de los labradores y la rapidez con que se resuelven los problemas, ha proyectado al Tribunal de las Aguas al ámbito internacional, considerándolo una institución modelo. Sin ribete de folklore, eficaz y esencialmente valenciano, el Tribunal de las Aguas ejerce ante un público curioso en el que no faltan jóvenes universitarios y visitantes extranjeros.
