Description

The Cathedral-Basilica Metropolitana de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora Santa Maria de Valencia, built in 1238 by the first bishop of Valencia after the Reconquest, Fray Andrés de Albalat, is currently the seat of the archbishopric of Valencia. The predominant style of construction is Valencian Gothic, although some elements of Romanesque, French Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical can be seen. The Holy Chalice (1st century), which was given to the cathedral by King Alfonso the Magnanimous in 1437, is venerated inside. Inside you can see paintings of the Quattrocento from all over the Iberian Peninsula which were commissioned by Alexander VI (the last Valencian Pope), in his time as Cardinal Rodrigo Borja making the request to elevate the Valencian see to the rank of Metropolitan, being granted by Pope Inociencio VIII in 1492. It belongs to the Borgia route.
