Description

The space that currently occupies the Central Market was, since the first expansion of the city, the usual location of the street markets. In 1839, in this location, an open market, the New Market, the germ of the current Central Market, was inaugurated. Towards the end of the 19th century this market is clearly insufficient for the city of Valencia. For this reason, in 1910, the City of Valencia announces a new competition for the construction of the new market and, of the six projects presented, the one of the architects Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial is chosen.
The architects Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial, at the behest of the municipal corporation, modified the original project and the Market was built according to the project dated in November 1914. The work was completed in 1928 by the architects Enrique Viedma and Ángel Romaní.
Alfonso XIII starred in the protocol with which the demolitions began. On October 24, 1910, with a silver pickaxe he gave several blows on the wall of number 24 of the Market Square. Finally, on January 23, 1928, the current building of the Central Market of Valencia was inaugurated.
The spectacle of the Central Market is undeniable. It is one of the most attractive and visited buildings in the city of Valencia. Its architecture does not break the aesthetic of the square, where it integrates perfectly with two other important monuments: the Silk Exchange and the Church of Saints Juanes. It is undoubtedly the most representative building of Valencia that at the beginning of the 20th century advances towards technological and commercial progress and is proud of the agricultural potential of its garden. This commitment to progress and agricultural production is reflected in the modernist structure of the market and the allegorical ornamentation we observe inside.
It has already celebrated 100 years since the laying of the foundation stone and 90 since the first day it was opened to the public. There is no better expression to convey what is the Central Market today. A sacred temple where the professors of fresh produce receive and transmit the most substantial wisdom, our food. The magical light that enters from its dome and its stained-glass windows, the permanent whisper that caresses the ears, the explosion of colors and aromas, the taste at the end of the classic and eternal flavors, mixed with the most surprising. An authentic theme park of gastronomy.
The Central Market of Valencia is a paradise with a gigantic larder of modernist architecture, containing all the fresh produce of the garden, all the flavor and smell of the Mediterranean inside.
The largest fresh produce market in Europe, in addition to the rich and varied food supply, is in one of the most emblematic modernist buildings in the city. With an area of more than 8,000 square meters, it is full of decorative allusions to the products of the orchard and gardens of Valencia. Its structure, formed by iron columns, reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower (Paris), tile and stained-glass windows, makes it an architectural attraction. It is a place where traditional shopping meets the increasing number of tourists who frequent this space.
This agora of Valencian gastronomy has about 300 stalls that highlight fresh fruits and vegetables, with orange, tomato, and beans as protagonists; meats; cheeses; fish and seafood, in whose stalls draws attention to live eels; spices; nuts, etc.
