Description

The nucleus of El Rabal, which extends to the west of the current Church of Santa María, under the site of which must have been the mosque; and Lo Cercado or La Ciudad, which was formed around the church of Santiago following the Christian conquest and was walled by Don Juan Manuel.

The now disappeared mosque must have been the civic centre of the Arab population, which lacked walls, as the first record of these dates from the 14th century, when the Christian nucleus was enclosed by order of Don Juan Manuel. Throughout the 16th century, the walls, together with the castle, underwent successive repairs.

From the 16th to the 17th century, the town experienced an important economic boom, which led to the reform and expansion of both parishes. On the one hand, the town developed on the slopes of the Sierra de la Villa (steep streets, irregular blocks), while the true centre of the town was located in a flatter area whose main axis was the Calle Mayor. The axis between the two areas of population would be the Plaza Mayor, where the markets would be held, in the vicinity of which was the granary and where the councils were held, at the foot of a tower of the so-called Puerta de la Villa, which would later be known as the "Torre del Orejón" as a clockwork mechanism was added to it, consisting of a face with large ears, which appeared every hour on the hour.
