Description

We find the Castle of Játiva on the Vernisa mountain range in the municipality of Játiva, Valencia. The construction is a double fortress and appears on the coat of arms of Játiva. Its architectural style is Valencian Gothic. The castle on the left is called "Castillo Menor", while the castle on the right is called "Castillo Mayor". We know that it is an Iberian construction that took advantage of one of the highest parts of the mountain at this point (Castillo Menor) and the Romans, when they conquered it, added a second fortress on the other high point of the mountain that was connected to the previous one (Castillo Mayor). Both were reformed by the Arabs, who also widened the wall, until it practically coincided with the one we know today. Later, with greater or lesser reforms, these walls and the castle faced the conquest of James I, the rebellion of the Germanías and the War of Succession, but the basis of the architectural ensemble was this one.

After the conquest of James I and the creation of the Kingdom of Valencia, the castle was used not only to defend the city but also as a prison for the State of the Crown of Aragon.
