Description

The Collegiate Church Basilica of Santa Maria is the most important building in the city of Xàtiva and construction began in 1596. It was converted into a Christian church and dedicated to Santa Maria when the city was conquered by King James I of Aragon. From the castle of Peñíscola, Pope Benedict XIII elevated this church to the category of collegiate church, made up of fifteen canons, a dean, a sacristan and a chantre. It has been a national monument since 1931 and a minor basilica since 1973. It belongs to the Borja route. It is a building of cathedral dimensions, with a Latin cross plan, 86 m long, 56 m wide at the transept and 16 m wide in the central nave. There is a central nave and two side aisles with four chapels in each. Above the transept, a concrete and iron one was erected to replace the original one, which was damaged by the collapse of 1886. The continuation of the naves is resolved with an ambulatory that surrounds the presbytery in which 9 radial chapels open. Its interior is similar to the Escorial where a clear Herrian influence can be seen, the central nave is covered with a barrel vault with lunettes and the side naves with vaults. The church has four doors, all of them of ashlar masonry and of great monumentality: the apse door, of Serlian style built in 1600 and the two side doors, twins where the Valencian Baroque style can be appreciated, and the main façade, which was finished in 1920, stands out for its elements of Romanesque and Byzantine tradition, being the most voluminous in the whole of the Valencian Community. The bell tower is 69 metres high and is the second highest in the Valencian Community
