Description

It is one of the most outstanding Iberian sites in the province, known since the discovery of an important collection of Iberian written plomos in 1979 (Fletcher 1980). Before the excavations began, it had studies of its eastern defensive system (Díes and Gimeno, 1995), as well as approximations to its extension, chronology and functionality (Quixal, 2010 and 2013). It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2016.

The archaeological actions began in 2017, framed in a research project in which the City Council of Yátova, the Museu de Prehistòria de València and the Universitat de València work side by side (Quixal et al., 2018). Among other objectives is to stop the serious despoiling activity that the site has suffered and to enhance its value.

Pico de los Ajos is about 3 hectares in extension, occupying the northwestern end of Sierra Martés, along a whole series of platforms, slopes and spurs. Excavations have focused on sector 1, the westernmost platform, where it is currently accessed, locating levels of the foundational phase (VII-VI centuries BC) and a series of battery apartments from the II-I centuries BC. There has also been intervention in sector 4, a rugged spur on the southern cliffs of the mountain range, where a building with auxiliary functionality of the II-I centuries BC was located. In that place, among other objects, a new lead written in Iberian, the first one coming from a reliable archaeological context, was recovered.

The site is partially consolidated and signposted, and has been accessible and open to visitors since 2020. It has a parking space in the Manquillo Mountain Refuge, from where you can easily climb a path that follows the GR-7. There is a scheduled calendar of guided tours, which are completed with the Museum Collection located in the town of Yátova where some pieces from the settlement are exhibited. It is part of the Ruta dels Ibers.
