Description

With its typical unfinished façade, the medieval Basilica of San Petronio dominates Piazza Maggiore, Bologna’s central and largest square, the true heart of the city since the 13th century. The central part of the square is characterized by a pedestrian platform built in white and pink granite, known as the “Crescentone“ because it remembers a large “crescenta”, a typical flatbread made in the city. In summer, the square becomes a huge open cinema and hosts the film retrospective “Sotto le stelle del cinema”, organized by the Bologna Film Archive. The screen is positioned in front of Palazzo dei Banchi, a Renaissance-style palace located on the eastern flank of the square. On the western flank of the square, there is Palazzo D’Accursio, Bologna City Hall, a mix of medieval and Gothic architecture. Palazzo dei Notai is located between Palazzo D’Accursio and the Basilica, and it was built in 1381 by the city's notaries guild as their seat. Facing the Basilica, the Palazzo del Podestà is the oldest building in the square and the first seat of the local government. In the 15th century, the original Gothic façade was reconstructed in the Renaissance style.
