Fara in Sabina is a Municipality in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region Lazio. It is located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northeast of Rome.
The area has a long history. In the past it was a settlement of the Sabines, an Italic people of the ancient Italian Peninsula already inhabiting the area before the founding of Rome. In the years it also was a castle, a possession of the Abbey of Farfa, and a fief of the Orsini, one of the most influencial Italian noble family in Medieval Italy and Rainessance Rome.
The municipal territory presents many architectural and archeological heritage. Among the others: the Abbey of Farfa, the Archeological Museum of Fara in Sabina, the Museum of Silence, etc.
In detail, the Abbey of Farfa is one of the most famous abbey in Europe. Based on archeological discoveries, it seems that the first monastic establishment was built on the ruins of a pagan temple. Today it belongs to the Benedictine Order and host a monastic community. The Church in the monastery presents elements of Romanesque and Rainessance styles, moreover some ancient ruins are included in the interior. The Abbey of Farfa has been declared a national monument.
