Description

Leonessa is a Municipality in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region Lazio. It is known to be the birthplace of St. Giuseppe di Leonessa. Historically, it is an art city of primarily medieval aspect. It was founded in 1278 by merging some nearby castles. In the 16th century became a possession of the Farnese, one of the most influencial noble family in the Italian Rainessance.
The area presents some architectural and cultural sites of particular interest. Among the others: the Angevin Tower (Torre Angioina), the Farnese Fountain (Fontana Farnesiana), the Sanctury of St. Giuseppe di Leonessa, etc. Moreover, in the historic center of Leonessa there are some remarkable buildings built between the 16th and 18th centuries.
In detail, the Angevin Tower was build in the Middle Age and it is part of the original defensive system of the town. The Farnese Fountain, placed in the town square, in front of the city hall, was part of the beautification process wanted by Margaret of Austria. Finally, the Sanctury of St. Giuseppe di Leonessa is an example of Baroque architecture.
