Description

Montenero Castle is placed in Montenero Sabino, a Municipality in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region Lazio. The castle stands at the top of the sloping hill on which the historic centre of the village is located and is the highest point in the town. It is also known as Orsini Castle, from the name of the Italian noble family that for many centuries, at various times, inhabited the castle.
The castle was built around the year 1000. Originally, it was conceived as a military outpost. Later, between 14th and 16th centuries, it underwent various architectural stratifications.
It belonged to several noble Italian families (Orsini, Mattei, and Vincentini) whose coats of arms and paintings are still visible. The interior of the castle houses beautiful rooms and frescoes of historical interest.
