Description

The Abbey of Saint John in Argentella (San Giovanni in Argentella) is a site in Palombara Sabina, a Municipality in the Province of Rome in the Italian region Lazio. The church, dated around the 8th century, was founded on the remains of an early Christian oratory and a Roman villa. The name “in Argentella” derives a spring of water in the near zone.
The church and its bell tower are in ancient Romanesque style. Significant architectural interventions were carried out by a small community, belonging to the Hermits of Saint William order, which was installed there by order of the bishop and Lord of Palombara Sabina Jacopo Savelli in 1284, and which remained there for about 100 years.
Between the 9th and 10th centuries the Abbey of Saint John in Argentella was one of the most powerful abbeys in Lazio. Abandoned over time, it was rediscovered in the late 1800s by the Bolognese painter Enea Monti and then declared an Italian National Monument.
