Description

The Savelli Torlonia castle stands in Palombara Sabina, a Municipality in the Province of Rome in the Italian region Lazio. It was built in the 11th century and subsequently remodeled (especially in the 16th century). The castle was ceded by the Counts of Palombara to the Savelli family around 1250. The Torlonia family took possession of the castle in 1893.
The original nucleus was probably built by the Ottaviani family. The medieval watchtower is one of the oldest elements of the castle, together with the fortified walkway.
The building, located at the highest point of the slope on which the town also develops, had a defensive function. Currently, the castle, owned by the municipality, hosts a library and a naturalistic museum.
