Description

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is located in Rieti. It is the main Catholic place of worship in the city (duomo). It was declared minor “basilica” by Pope Gregory XVI and it is counted among the Italian national monuments. Some of its spaces are annexed to the Diocesan Museum of Ecclesiastical Heritage, where works of sacred art and liturgical objects are exhibited.
The construction of the building dates back to at least the 6th century, but during the 12th century there was a complete reconstruction that caused an expansion and modernization of the structure. The bell tower dates back to 1253, while the baptistery is from the 14th century and the portico that connects the latter to the cathedral was built in 1458.
Some baroque additions were made to the original Romanesque style, especially in the interior. Other changes were made later, also due to two earthquakes (in 1785 and 1898). Between 1920 and 1930 there was some works to restore the cathedral's original Romanesque style. Numerous artists have worked on artistic and architectural elements inside the cathedral, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Giuseppe Valadier.
The cathedral was the site of important historical events, such as the coronation of Charles II of Anjou.
