Description

The Dolphin fountain is located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Rieti, which is the main square of the city. In 1865 it was moved slightly based on a project to expand the square, and in 1930 it was completely removed to be placed in another square. In 1988, following a popular petition, the fountain was relocated to the original place for which it was conceived.
The baroque-style fountain is an example of a 17th-century "water show": elegant in sumptuous forms, rich in allegorical symbolisms, useful and functional to the water needs of the community. To date it is mutilated in some of its parts.
The first project conceived in the 17th century was followed by that of the architect Vicentini. After that, it was renovated in the mid-19th century and later finished with tubs and tritons.
