Description

The Roman bridge of Rieti is a Roman bridge over the Velino river within the city. It was built in the 3rd century B.C. and was part of the ancient Via Salaria, an ancient Roman consolular road, which allowed Rome to supply salt from the Adriatic Sea.
In Medieval times it was fortified with a tower gate. The original structure was demolished in the 1930s, as the bridge obstructed the flow of water, causing the river to flood. Its remains are still visible alongside the modern bridge, depending on the water level.
It was a bridge with three round arches, with the central one wider than the side ones. It is built in opus quadratum with large blocks of travertinoid limestone. It was 38.90 m long, 5.15 m wide inside, 6.20 m wide outside.
