Description

In Rieti there are three statues dedicated to some iconic characters of the city (real or symbolic), which are evidence of its past: The Statue of San Francesco; the statue of Marco Terenzio Varrone; the Statue of the farmer.

The statue dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, located in Piazza Mariano Vittori, was created in 1927 by the Rieti sculptor Cristo Giordano Nicoletti.
The Saint frequented the city of Rieti for a long time between 1209 and 1225, especially the hermitages that dotted the hills and mountains around the Rieti valley. Here he lived some of the crucial experiences of his life, such as the miracle of Greccio on the occasion of Christmas 1223, which gave life to the tradition of the nativity scene.
