Description

The Teatro Flavio Vespasiano is the main theatre and opera house in Rieti. It is named after the Roman emperor (Tito Flavio Vespasiano) who was born in the nearby of the city.
Designed by the architect Achille Sfondrini, the theatre was inaugurated on 20 September 1893 with a performance of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Gounod’s Faust.
The building’s structure and cupola’s frescos were damaged by an earthquake in 1898. So the cupola was repainted and the building repaired. A major restoration regarding the structure and the decorations took place from 2005 until 2009.
