Description

The Casale San Pio V is a building of great historical and artistic interest, covering five centuries of Italian history. Its construction, started in the 16th century on behalf of Cardinal Antonio Ghislieri (future Pope Pius V), was completed in 1567, when it became the summer residence of the newly elected Pope. It is said that it was from a window of the building that the Pope had the famous vision of the victory at the Battle of Lepanto. Over the years the building had different owners, becoming over time a place of culture and training: in 1655 it was purchased by the Chigi family and in the 19th century Princess Margherita, wife of the heir to the throne Umberto di Savoia, made it a Hospice for the blind poor people. Today the building, restored and renovated, is the International headquarters of the Link Campus University of Rome.
