Description

The first news of a fountain in Piazza XX Settembre (then called Piazza Grande) dates back to 1552. The original construction must have consisted of an octagonal marble basin and was not embellished by the statue, a work by Donnino Ambrosi from Urbino, representing 'Fortuna'. The bronze statue was made in 1593 but, as it was considered too bare, it was placed in a niche in the Palazzo dei Priori and replaced by a large bronze vase. The dispute over where to place the statue lasted more than a century, as it was not placed on the fountain until 1611 (BATTISTELLI 2005).

It was fed by the Roman aqueduct, by means of terracotta pipes in the section as far as the Fontana dello spiazzo del Molino (near the Augustus Arch) and by lead and terracotta pipes from there to the piazza.

The bronze statue is now kept in the Museo Civico and replaced by a copy. Looking closely at the figure, one notices an incongruity between the veil and the hair of the goddess Fortuna: one goes, inflated by the wind, in one direction, the other in the opposite direction. The fountain was restored in 2003.
