Description

The Petrovaradin Fortress was a significant military fortification of the Austrian rulers who hid their treasures in the fortress during Napoleon's conquests.

According to a legend, the name of the Petrovaradin fortress consists of three words which mean 'a city on a rock as strong as faith'. Due to its strategic position and the importance that the fortress had for the Habsburg monarchy, it was called 'Gibraltar on the Danube'. It consists of the Upper and Lower Towns that rise above the Danube and represent the symbol of Novi Sad.

The most famous part of the Petrovaradin Fortress is the Clock Tower on Ludwig's Bastion. The clock is characterized by its clock hands: the small hand indicates the minutes, while the large hand represents the hours. This unusual clock was constructed so that people, mostly shipowners, could read time from a great distance.

The Petrovaradin Fortress it is the location where the world-famous EXIT festival has been held for 20 years.
