Description

Placed in the Almaš neighbourhood, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, the Novi Sad factory for silk dyeing was active until the 1970s. Today, there is no more silk in the area, but the old factory and the distinctive chimney keet the memory of the times when 'Svilara' was a generator of economic and social development of the neighbourhood.

The project of revitalisation of the 'Svilara' Cultural Station has been initiated and accepted by the local community, and supported and implemented within the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ project. It is an excellent example of revitalization and synergy of different stakeholders joined around common values and goals. Being suitable for artistic contents and programmes, with the main programme topic being cultural heritage itself, 'Svilara' Cultural Station portrays a true example of this neighbourhood’s cultural heritage.

A long-standing initiative of the local community to declare the Almaš neighbourhood a protected historical area, together with the energy that the 'Svilara' Cultural Station brought, happened in June 2019. In the 21st century, 'Svilara' continues with production, but this time it’s producing ideas and creativity.
