Description

Charfia fishing is a fishing technique that catches fish alive in the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia. It is a fixed fishing system that consists of using palm leaves and planting them in the sea in an arrow-shaped line. It is a kind of labyrinth into which the fish enter and get trapped alive when the tide falls. Later on, the fish is selected and collected by the fishermen when visiting their Charfias. Each Kerkennian can own a part of the sea to set their Charfias in and no one has the right to trespass the other’s owned sea parts. The Charfia fishing is a very old fishing technique that dates back to the Phoenician era. It is now a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
