Description

It is only known that the wooden church existed before the city received the Magdeburg Law. It was Andriy Potocki, the founder of Ivano-Frankivsk, who ordered the construction of the church. In 1669, instead of a wooden building, a new one was built in the Baroque style. The Collegiate Church of the Virgin Mary became a magnificent architectural decoration of the city.
Interestingly, since 1980 the church has not been used for its main purpose, because the Ivano-Frankivsk Art Museum is located within its walls. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that about 15 thousand monuments of fine and folk art of the Carpathian region (icon painting, baroque sculpture, masterpieces of classical painting) are collected here.
In 1990-93, the wall paintings were restored in the church, and in order to replenish the museum's funds with samples of folk clothes and embroidery, scientific expeditions were organized to the Hutsul, Pokuttya, Opillya and Boykivshchyna.
