Description

Not every similar institution can compete with it in terms of the value of exhibits, the scale of the names of authors and the variety of genres of works that can be seen with your own eyes. The collection of the Kherson Regional Art Museum named after Oleksii Shovkunenko has long received consistently high marks from both specialists and ordinary visitors. It is quite easy to make sure of this - just visit the museum, located in the center of Kherson, in the building of the former city Duma. This building received the status of a "business card" of the city a century ago.

The official date of the Kherson Art Museum opening is 1978. The celebrations took place in May, when the bicentennial of the city was celebrated. However, the history of the museum is much longer.
- 1890 - on the initiative of a local archaeologist, journalist and public figure Viktor Goshkevich, the Archaeological Museum was opened in Kherson. Of particular value were the items of church antiquity, in particular ancient icons and utensils. Among the exhibits were works created in princely times, religious objects found in the ruins of the Zaporizhzhya Sich, as well as ten Ukrainian icons on canvas.
- 1907 - the collection under the name "Kherson City Museum of Antiquities and Fine Arts" was transferred to the city government.
- May 1912 - the Museum of Fine Arts was opened in the premises of the Pedagogical Museum, located on the ground floor of the former night shelter of the Falz-Fein family.
- After the 1917 revolution in Russia, the museum lost both its status and name. In official documents it is called "the art department of the Kherson Historical and Archaeological (or the only Kherson City) Museum. However, the collection continues to be replenished with gifts from Kherson artists, as well as from the proceeds from nationalized private collections in Kherson and its surroundings.

In this way, for example, from the nationalized estate "Zolota Balka", which used to belong to Princess Svyatopolk-Mirska, the museum received:
- Ancient paintings.
- Engravings.
- Porcelain.
- Miniatures.
- More than a thousand books (mostly of the 18th century).
During the occupation of Kherson during the Second World War, part of the museum's valuables were taken to Germany and Romania, much documentation was destroyed. After the end of the fighting, as a result of persistent searches, a significant part of the collection - about nine hundred exhibits - was returned to the museum.

The collection of the current museum named after Shovkunenko in Kherson is about twelve thousand works of painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative and applied art of different periods and thematic areas.
It includes:
- private collection of works of St. Petersburg collector Maria Kornilovskaya, donated to the city;
- exhibits of the former art department of the Kherson Museum of Local Lore;
- works transferred from the collection of the National Museum "Kyiv Art Gallery" (formerly Kyiv Museum of Russian Art);
- exhibits of the Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art;
- gifts from owners of private art collections from different cities of Ukraine and abroad.
A very valuable part of the collection is a collection of Russian and Ukrainian images of the 17th - early 20th centuries. Most of them are examples of the so-called "late" icons: stylistically diverse, complex in symbolism and plots, iconographic types.

"Ukrainian Icon". The collection of Ukrainian icons is small in number, but deserves the closest attention. These are images made on wide horizontal canvases, in the 18th - 19th centuries they decorated rural churches of Central Ukraine.

- Icon "Saint George the Victorious with the Apostles Peter and Paul", 19th century, in three parts.
- Icon "Annunciation", late 18th - early 19th century.
- Icon "Christ and the Samaritan Woman", late 18th - early 19th century, and others.
