Description

It is one of the symbols of the city, a prominent city monument. This monument is considered one of the best monuments to Taras Shevchenko in the world.
It is located in the center of Kharkiv - in the Taras Shevchenko Garden, at the entrance to the central alley from Sumska Street. The monument is organically connected with the surrounding park landscape and the city architectural ensemble.
The authors of the monument are Soviet sculptor Matvey Manizer and architect Joseph Langbard.
The monument was inaugurated on March 24, 1935, that is, 9 months after Kharkiv ceased to be the capital of the Ukrainian SSR. Also, this period - the mid-1930s - is one of the most tragic in the history of Ukraine: Collectivization was destroying the peasantry, the country suffered the Holodomor of 1932-1933, Ukrainianization was curtailed, and Stalinist repressions were rampant.
Features of the monument: The monument to Shevchenko is made in the Stalinist Baroque style, which was common at that time. The multifaceted composition of the monument includes an almost five-meter bronze figure of the Kobzar and a pedestal around which 16 dynamic figures are placed in a spiral. Among them you can see serfs, heroes of his works and even Soviet workers. All parts of the monument are made of black labradorite. The statue of the poet is full of dynamics: in the slightly tilted head, in the energetic gesture of the right hand, and in general in the whole figure of Shevchenko one can see the readiness for action, purposefulness, inner tension, which was to accentuate the image of Taras Shevchenko as a poet and revolutionary artist. An angry gesture - a hand tightly clenched in a fist - adds integrity. According to the sculptor, the figures at the bottom of the pedestal should be viewed in the sequence of the compositional spiral, starting from "Catherine" and moving counterclockwise.
This monument to Taras Shevchenko is officially recognized as the most beautiful in Europe.
