Description

The Resurrection Cathedral was built in 1702 by the first Sumy colonels - Herasym and Andrii Kondratiev. This temple is the only monument that remains from the founders who came to these Slobozhansky lands in 1655 from the Bila Tserkva region, more precisely, from the town of Stavyshcha. Having enlisted the support of the Moscow Tsar, they built a fortress and named it Sumy. And half a century later, the Resurrection Church was built here, which later became a cathedral.
The temple also performed defensive functions. This is evidenced by deeply planted windows and walls one and a half meters thick. From the large basement stretched underground passages to the river Psyol.
The Resurrection Cathedral in Sumy is one of the best examples of Ukrainian Baroque in the region. The temple harmoniously combines the features of stone and wooden Cossack architecture. The first bell tower was tent and adjacent to the temple. The modern 65-meter bell tower of the cathedral was built in 1906 in the neo-baroque style.
In Soviet times, the cathedral was closed, but the premises were not left empty: the temple was converted into warehouses for the production of regional production. Soon the department of decorative and applied arts of the Sumy Art Museum was located within the walls of the cathedral.
In the 70s of the last century, a large-scale restoration of the Resurrection Cathedral took place.

A legend associated with the cathedral:
There are many legends connected with the history of the Holy Resurrection Cathedral. According to one of them, the founder of the city Gerasim Kondratiev had a sister Maria, who had a slow temper. In those days, Sumy suffered from the atrocities of a gang of robbers who robbed the inhabitants of the city and its surroundings. Eventually the robbers were captured, but the leader of the gang was Maria, the sister of Herasym Kondratiev. At a family meeting, the powerful brother made a difficult but fair decision - to bury the evil sister in the walls of the church of that time.
And in fact, during later surveys of the temple walls and dungeons, passages leading to the river Psyol were found, as well as the remains of a woman's body.
