Description

The pond in Ternopil (also called Ternopil Lake) is huge in area and occupies 300 hectares, which corresponds to the size of one of the city's districts - Vostochnyi. The reservoir is as old as the city itself in Halychyna. Life is constantly in full swing around the lake. It is one of the most favorite places of rest for Ternopil residents and guests of the city.
In the middle of the 16th century, the founder of the city Jan Amor Tarnowski received permission to build a dam and create a pond. This was done not for entertainment, but for a serious purpose: the reservoir became a kind of fortification that protected the townspeople from attacks of Turks and Tatars. In the center of the city there was a fortress built by the same Tarnavsky. The boundaries of the pond in those days were Kutkivtsi (now a district of the city, and then a village on the outskirts) on the one hand, Ternopil Castle - on the other. That is, the length of the reservoir was 7 kilometers, and the width - about three.
A high dam was built along the road to Lviv. The townspeople had to take care of it. The pond gave the owner significant profits. Later, four mills were built here, and fish were bred in the lake: pikes, perches, carps, crucians. In the early 20th century, the reservoir was leased by a local entrepreneur who exported fish even to Poland. In the period between the two world wars, the pond fell into decay, as well as the entire city economy. It had a low water level, and it silted up, a lot of vegetation appeared in the pond. But the worst happened during the Second World War: the pond was completely destroyed.
The restoration of the reservoir began in the postwar years as part of the subordination of all water resources to local authorities. A new dam was built, after that the water level rose. The reservoir became even larger in area: more than 300 hectares, and received a new name - Komsomol Lake. Taras Shevchenko Park was laid between it and the city center on the eastern bank. At the same time, the island of Lovers was created. It is interesting that in the Shevchenko Park itself a separate lake was created - "Chaika", which was the bay of Komsomolsky. The lake was renamed Komsomolske in 1992, since then the reservoir is called Ternopil Pond.
Strange as it may seem, but even ships sail on the pond. The first one appeared in 1968. Now, on weekends, in good weather, you can take a ride on one of the two boats that ply it: one is called "Hero of Dancers", the other - "Captain Pariy". The boats are also used for corporate parties, weddings and other events. In addition to ships, there is a sailing yacht "Ternopil", it is "registered" at the pier in Shevchenko Park, opposite the playground. It can also be ordered for a walk.
Around Ternopil Lake there are many sports facilities and places for practicing various sports disciplines. These are: Rowing base "Spartak". Children and Youth Sports School "Burevisnyk". "Ternopil Windsurfing Club. A special rowing channel for training canoeists, kayakers and boaters. As part of the hockey championship "Ternopil Hockey Classic" in 2013, the largest ice rink in Ukraine was arranged on the pond. Experts then recorded a national record: "The largest skating rink in Ukraine" with a total area of 4 512.84 m². Every year, athletics competitions in running - "Ternopil Lake Race" - are held around the pond.
