Description

The central building is located in the center of Zhytomyr, on the Castle Hill, in the historical part of the city.
Zhytomyr Local History Museum originates from the museum founded in October 1865 at the Russian Public Library in Zhytomyr. The basis of the latter was a private collection of local rocks and minerals of the Volyn governor M. Chertkov, presented to the library and exhibited on the day of its opening.
The Zhytomyr Museum of Local Lore includes a number of museum institutions of Zhytomyr region, located both in the regional center and outside it, as branches:
- Literary-Memorial Museum of V. Korolenko (in Zhytomyr)
- Lesya Ukrainka Literary and Memorial Museum in Zvyagel
- Korosten Museum of Local Lore
- Museum of Partisan Glory of Polissya in the village of Slovechne, Ovruch district
- Museum-estate of the Rylsky family in the village of Romanivka, Popilnyansky district
- Brusyliv Historical Museum named after I. I. Ogienko

Today, the funds of the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local Lore contain more than 160 thousand monuments that give a comprehensive picture of the natural features, history and culture of the Zhytomyr region. Among them is one of the best natural history collections in Ukraine, which includes a unique taxidermy collection of fauna (collection of stuffed animals) of Zhytomyr region, collected by local historian and zoologist Vsevolod Brukhovsky. Among the most valuable collections of the museum are archaeological materials from the excavations of the Zhytomyr site of the Early Paleolithic, Radomyshl site of the Late Paleolithic, Raikovets settlement of the XII-XIII centuries, ethnographic monuments of Zhytomyr Polissya, art gallery. In the 1990s-2000s, during the independence of Ukraine, the museum created expositions dedicated to the era of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-33.

Stationary exhibitions of the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local Lore:
- Western European painting of the XVI - early XX centuries. The exhibition presents the art of Italy (XVI-XVIII centuries), Holland (XVII-XVIII centuries), France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland (late XVIII - early XX centuries).
- Traditional weaving and embroidery of Zhytomyr region of the late XIX - XX centuries. The exhibition presents real household items collected by the museum staff in different villages.
- From the natural collections of the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local Lore. Part of the unique zoological collection is placed in the exhibition halls.
- Our land in the era of the Ukrainian People's Republic. 1917-1921 The exhibition tells about the events of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921 in our region. It presents documents, photographs, money, weapons, household items of that period. Also, part of the exhibition is devoted to the ATO.
