Description

The city of Montevideo, had its heyday of excellent examples of Art Deco between 1925 and 1940. In a short tour you can see these architectural landmarks of art composed of blacksmithing, stained glass, bronze ornaments, carpentry and good building volumetric management. Art Deco architecture was inserted into the urban fabric of Montevideo and thus became Montevideo's heritage, becoming internationally recognized. For this reason, Av. 18 de Julio became an appropriate setting for these expressions of modernity, where more than 20 works stand out in their volume and height, which were made by prestigious period architects in conjunction with technicians and craftsmen who generated very good quality of works. In this tour we highlight the Diaz Palace by the architects Gonzalo VAZQUEZ BARRIÈRE and Rafael RUANO, built between 1929 and 1930. In 1995 this work was Declared a Property of Departmental Interest. The Palacio Diaz represents the glorification of modernity in a tall building of considerable importance within the center of Montevideo, becoming an unavoidable element within Avenida 18 de Julio. The staggering of volumes and the accentuated verticality reach their culmination in the auction, achieving the effect of a free-standing tower, which refers to the image of the American skyscraper. The ground floor, on the level of the main avenue, is intended for businesses, this accentuates the character of the extension of the sidewalk towards the interior of the building, facilitating access through receptive forms, according to the deco language. Art Deco language soberly accompanies the volumetric resolution, appealing to both the North American and French versions. The tripartite structure of the basement, development plane and crown is clear. The plinth corresponds to all levels not intended for housing and stands out for its color, material and intercolumniation where large striated and geometrically decorated pilasters solve the two business levels and the large entablature becomes the facade of the technical mezzanine. A wide eaves-cornice culminates the base plan and marks the seat of the development plan. From there, the imposing verticality of the housing area arises, underlined by the molding and verticalizing window. The decoration is reduced to the balconies of artistic deco ironwork and certain finishes in the final section.
